We held our first Grandparents' Sunday in conjunction with the feast of Saints Joachim
and Anne, the parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus. It was an opportunity to
bring folks together across generational lines and to acknowledge the important role
that grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren, giving them a sense of
tradition and family. At the end of Mass, we extended a special blessing to all
grandparents and then shared in a time of fellowship in the Gathering Area of the
church
The Ice Cream Social is an annual event sponsored by the parish to invite our parishioners,
neighbors, and friends to come together in the hope of getting to know one another
and building a stronger community. We began with a prayer service in the church
where we prayed for peace--in the world, in the city, in our neighborhood, and in
our hearts. We also prayed for the safety of our children and young people. This
year we were treated to a dance performance by the youth ministry of True Love Ministries
Church. Afterwards, we went out on the lawn of the church to feast on hot dogs,
root beer floats, pie, cookies, cake, ice cream and other goodies. Most of the food
is donated by parishioners, who also set-up, serve out guests, and clean-up. Attendance
was higher than usual and everyone seemed to enjoy him or herself. The gathering
culminated with the drawings for door prizes.
from the inter-congregational barbecue that was held on that same day, later in the
afternoon. It was sponsored by four congregations: St. Bridget Catholic Church,
St. John Episcopal Church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, and True Love Ministries, a
non-denominational Christian fellowship. These are four communities that work together
through the ISAIAH Organization to bring about change in the city and on the Northside.
The barbecue was the second social occasion where the members of the congregations
were invited to get to know one another in the hope of modeling the kind of community
and fellowship they are trying to build on the Northside and beyond.
