The Social Justice Committee looks at the systemic reasons for poverty in our community and works in collaboration with other churches and agencies to change the policies and programs that cause inequity. We partner with ISAIAH, a faith-based organization of 100 churches of various denominations, as well as the Office of Social Justice in the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis. Past campaigns include efforts to curb domestic violence; jobs for people of color on the construction of the Twins Stadium; community development that benefits the residents of the near north side; and various gatherings at the Capitol, County Government Center and City Hall to discuss issues with our elected officials.

On Tuesday, May 21st, 6:30 PM Jaymie Kelly, who is facing foreclosure, will be our speaker. Also joining us is Nathan Paulsen with Occupy Homes MN who is helping Jaymie negotiate an affordable loan. Join us for a discussion about the foreclosure crisis and what we can do to keep our communities strong by helping our neighbors stay in their homes.

Thanks to a new relationship between our parish community—through the Social Justice Committee—and Second Harvest, we have a new place to channel our non-perishable food items. Second Harvest, an agency of Feeding America (a network of U.S. food banks that combine resources to advocate for the hungry) operates a food bank in Golden Valley that supplies a number of local food shelves that serve people on the north side. Please bring non-perishable food items to either campus and they will be taken to Second Harvest. Members of the Social Justice committee and other parishioners also volunteer each third Thursday of the month to package groceries and produce at a local school. If you’re interested in joining the effort, call Sr. Gert at the Parish Office.
The Social Justice Committee is looking for a few additional volunteers that could help on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:00-7:00 PM with the Second Harvest Food Shelf. It is located on 26th and Colfax Ave. N at the Nellie Stone Johnson School. It is a great opportunity to help with the "Bigger Community". If you would like to help please contact Sr. Gert or Gerri Hare. Thank you!
THE SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE asks you to please bring non-perishable food items to either campus for the local food shelves. Thank you for your continued support!
